Professional headlight restoration services

Over time, headlights naturally become cloudy, yellowed, or oxidized due to UV exposure, road debris, and environmental wear. This not only affects the look of your vehicle, it significantly reduces nighttime visibility and driving safety.

Our professional headlight restoration service is designed to fully restore clarity, improve light output, and protect your headlights for the long term, using two distinct restoration options depending on your needs and budget.

Whether you want a factory-level, long-lasting finish or a cost-effective restoration with solid short-to-mid term protection, we have a solution tailored for you.

The cause

Why headlights become cloudy

Modern headlight lenses are made from polycarbonate plastic, which is lightweight and impact-resistant but highly vulnerable to UV damage. Most factory headlights carry a thin UV-resistant layer that degrades over time.

01

Yellowing and haze

As the protective factory layer breaks down, the lens begins to turn yellow or hazy.

02

Surface oxidation

Oxidation develops across the lens surface, sometimes with visible cracking in the old clear coat.

03

Lost transparency

The lens loses transparency and clarity, so less light makes it through to the road.

04

Reduced light output

Nighttime light output drops noticeably even though the bulbs themselves are fine.

05

Unsafe conditions

Low-visibility driving becomes genuinely more dangerous, especially on unlit Rhode Island back roads.

06

Inspection risk

Heavily degraded headlights can contribute to a failed vehicle inspection.

Restoration is not only cosmetic. It is about restoring proper road safety and compliance, then protecting the lens so it does not go right back to hazy.
Two options

Choose the protection level that fits your vehicle

Both options fully restore clarity and improve safety. They differ in longevity and protection level, so the right choice depends on how long you plan to own the vehicle.

The process

How we restore a headlight

Mask and protect

Surrounding paint and trim are masked off so nothing gets touched but the lens.

Multi-grit wet sanding

Headlights are sanded with 600, 800, 1000, 1500, and 2000 grit paper to remove all old yellowing and cracking in the clear coat of the lens. Each grit removes the sanding marks left by the last one.

Refinement and polishing

The lens is machine polished and refined until it is optically clear and smooth, not just less yellow.

Surface prep for adhesion

The lens is cleaned and prepped so the coating or clear coat bonds properly rather than sitting on residue.

Protection applied

Either a true 2K automotive clear coat for years of durability, or a professional protective headlight coating for up to 18 months.

Cure and inspection

The coating is given proper cure time, then both lenses are checked side by side for even clarity before the vehicle leaves.

Why it matters

Why professional restoration matters

DIY kits and quick fixes often fail because they only temporarily mask oxidation rather than fully removing it. Without proper sanding, refinement, and UV protection, headlights quickly return to a cloudy or yellowed state.

01

Complete removal of oxidation

Not just surface masking. The degraded factory layer comes off entirely.

02

Proper surface preparation

Prep is what makes the difference between protection that lasts and protection that flakes.

03

Even restoration across the lens

No blotchy patches, no clear center with hazy edges.

04

Protection against future UV damage

A real UV-resistant coating, so you are not back here in six months.

05

Safe, controlled refinishing

No lens damage, no scratched paint around the housing.

06

Far cheaper than replacement

Restoration improves safety and appearance without replacing expensive headlight assemblies.

Signs to watch for

When headlight restoration is needed

You may need headlight restoration if you notice:

  • Yellowing or foggy headlights
  • Reduced nighttime visibility
  • Uneven or dull light output
  • Surface cracking or oxidation
  • Failed vehicle inspection due to headlight condition
  • A car that otherwise looks great but reads as old from the front

Restoring your headlights not only improves appearance, it ensures safer driving conditions. Clear headlights mean better visibility, safer driving, and a cleaner, more modern look for your vehicle.

Where we are

Headlight restoration near Providence, Cranston, Johnston and Pawtucket

Headlight restoration is done at our shop at 147 Snake Hill Road in North Scituate, about ten minutes from Johnston, twenty from Providence, and twenty-five from Pawtucket and Cranston. It is $200 for the full 2K clear coat process on a standard vehicle, it is bookable online, and it pairs well with an express detail so the car leaves clean as well as clear. The sanding and polishing is about an hour of work; the 2K clear coat then needs time to cure before the car goes back out, so plan on a drop-off rather than a wait.

A lot of the headlights we restore come in the week before an inspection, or right after a driver notices the low beams are not lighting the road on Route 6 or Route 44 at night. Both are good reasons. Our area pages cover the route and the drop-off if you are coming from Providence, Cranston, Johnston or Pawtucket.

Questions

Headlight restoration questions

How much does headlight restoration cost?

Headlight restoration is $200 for a standard vehicle, which covers the full 2K automotive clear coat process. Heavily cracked or deeply oxidized lenses can take more time. See exact pricing in online booking.

How long does the 2K clear coat last?

Years, when properly applied and cured. The 2K clear coat is the same type of coating used on vehicle paintwork, which is why it holds up far better than a wipe-on sealant.

Why do DIY headlight kits stop working after a few months?

Most kits polish the surface without fully removing the degraded factory UV layer, and the protection they include is a temporary wipe-on product. Once that wears off, the exposed polycarbonate oxidizes again quickly.

Can badly cracked headlights be restored?

Often, yes. Cracking usually lives in the old factory clear coat rather than the lens itself, and wet sanding removes it. Send us photos and we will give you an honest answer before you book.

How long does the service take?

The polish and coating option is a same-visit service. The full 2K clear coat option needs additional time for proper application and curing, so plan on leaving the vehicle longer.

Will restoration help my car pass inspection?

If headlight condition was the issue, restoring clarity and light output addresses the underlying problem. We cannot speak for the inspection station, but clear lenses that throw proper light are what they are looking for.

Do you offer headlight restoration near Providence, or do I have to come to Scituate?

All headlight work is done at the shop in North Scituate, about a twenty-minute drive from Providence and ten from Johnston. We do not offer mobile restoration, because the wet sanding and the 2K clear coat need a controlled space and proper cure time. Plan on a drop-off, and confirm timing when you book.
